MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the Student Promoted Access Center for Education and Service (SPACES) is to act as an empowering dynamic on campus where UCSD students collaborate to achieve greater educational equity. This encompasses equal access to higher education, undergraduate retention and graduation, and matriculation to graduate and professionals schools.
SPACES values the power of student initiated action and organizing by providing an environment for student growth and development and thus is a foundation to create leadership and unity through community engagement.
SPACES shall serve as the center for student initiated access and retention projects at the university. Student Initiated Access Programs and Services (SIAPS) shall exist as the "access" component to SPACES. The Academic Success Program (ASP) shall exist as the "retention" component to SPACES.
NATIONAL HUMAN TRAFFICKING AWARENESS DAY
January 11 is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day.
In commemoration of this day, the Women's Center will be conducting a collection drive through the month of January on behalf of the Bilateral Safety Corridor Coalition (BSCC).
The BSCC is an alliance of over 60 government and nonprofit agencies in the United States and Latin America that combat slavery and human trafficking. BSCC's purpose is to bilaterally prevent and intervene in the commercial and sexual exploitation of men, women and children while advocating for all exploited persons. Through the collaborative efforts of coalition members, BSCC administers a variety of projects and services for victims, law enforcement, and the community.
We will be collecting used cell phones, ink cartridges and laser toner cartridges to benefit BSCC and help in their efforts to combat human trafficking.
In addition, BSCC coalition members hand out purse-sized cosmetics labeled with hotline information to suspected victims of human trafficking. If you have any unused or unopened purse-size cosmetics such as compacts, mirrors, lipstick, nail polish, perfume, etc that is just collecting dust, please consider donating it to the UCSD Women's Center.
Donations may be dropped off at Student Center West Bldg. 290 (across from the Main Gym) or sent through inter-campus mail at MC 0096. Upon request, donors will be provided with a tax receipt. For more information contact Emelyn dela Pena at emdelapena@ucsd.edu. For more information about the BSCC visit www.bsccoalition.org.
