LOVE YOUR BODY DAY 2007
Thursday, October 18 at the Women's Center
11am - 2:30pm
We'll have food, fun, art, film, information, and much more! Today is a day to fight back against the negative images about our bodies conveyed to us through media, fashion, and other industries.
Together, we can fight back!
About Love Your Body Day, from the NOW Foundation:
"Do you love what you see when you look in the mirror?
Hollywood and the fashion, cosmetics and diet industries work hard to make each of us believe that our bodies are unacceptable and need constant improvement. Print ads and television commercials reduce us to body parts - lips, legs, breasts - airbrushed and touched up to meet impossible standards. TV shows tell women and teenage girls that cosmetic surgery is good for self-esteem. Is it any wonder that 80% of U.S. women are dissatisfied with their appearance? Women and girls spend billions of dollars every year on cosmetics, fashion, magazines and diet aids. These industries can't use negative images to sell their products without our assistance."
DR. ALISON KAFER LECTURE
Thursday, October 11, 2007 4:00pm-5:30pm
at Room 107, Liechtag Biomedical Research Building.
Professor of feminist studies, Alison Kafer grew up near the coast in New Bern, North Carolina. She graduated with a B.A. in studio art, with a concentration in painting from Wake Forest University. About a year following graduation from Wake Forest University, Kafer was in an arson fire and, consequently, ended up in a wheelchair. This incident prompted her to begin her graduate studies.
Kafer has several on-going research projects that concern the understanding of disability in the United States through a queer feminist viewpoint.
Free and open to the public. ASL Interpretation provided.
