2008 “Spirit of the Hall of Fame”
Bonnie Dumanis is the first woman to serve as the District Attorney for San Diego County. Since taking office in January 2003, DA Dumanis has shown extraordinary leadership in several areas. With public safety as her top priority, her office has focused on crime prevention, reducing recidivism, helping victims and keeping the office transparent and accessible to the people of San Diego County.
2008 Inductees
Judge Elizabeth Riggs was San Diego’s first African-American woman judge in 1979. She is a leader on behalf of black attorneys, cross-cultural alliances and local youth – in and outside of court.
Marianne McDonald, professor of Theater at the University of California, San Diego, is the author of over 24 books. Her plays have been performed at the Old Globe Theater, and she is a legendary influence in San Diego’s theatres. She is also Founder of the Scripps McDonald Center.
Sylvia Hampton has been an influential leader and author on behalf of the League of Women Voters by advocating for health care, naturalization, and political education. She served on President Nixon’s Title X Family Planning Council.
Karen Vigneault of the Kumeyaay Nation of Native Americans, travels nationally as an advocate of Native American and LGBT rights. She is an advocate of child abuse prevention, mentors nurses of color, and is as an active organizer of American Indian Cultural Days in Balboa Park.
Judith Munk (1925-2006), sculptor, architect, and Scripps Institute of Oceanography advocate, designed UCSD buildings and the internationally-known cable foot bridge at Scripps. She saved historical UCSD buildings and volunteered extensively in the community and on campus.
